Art doesnt have to be explained to be important. Wow! That really struck with cord. Oftentimes while making art, the thought of it not being extraordinary comes to mind. The feeling to explain why I made something stops me. But this really made me go like wow, it doesn’t have to be explained. I am experiencing something and it is out there in the form of art. And that already makes it important. If not in the grander scheme of things, definitely in my grand life. Thank you for sharing this ✨✨
I probably need to re-read this. When I read it before, I was still a therapist (now retired) with a speciality in early life trauma and all of the related challenges that those individuals face throughout their lives. I read it. I appreciated her writing. However, all of the emotional challenges she wrote about were things I addressed every day with my clients, so it was a tough read for me. Now that I have some distance, I’ll give it another go. Thanks for the nudge!
Thank you (and welcome back!). Your thoughts resonate with me. After 21 years of exclusively ”useful” writing in my work, I’ve just begun writing for pure enjoyment and exploration. I already love it. It feels as if I have found a new balcony from which to view the world from another angle.
I’m trying to write a novel, and it’s going OK, but I decided to reread Lonesome Dove because it did the same thing for me as The Goldfinch did for you (I also loved Goldfinch!).
"Donna Tartt writes the way a person breathes when they’re trying not to cry" - Love this...
thankyou for reading, sending love 💌
Writing for me in a way is escapism where my soul feels understood and free.
beautiful
Sometimes we forget that writing is the way to make the scream of our soul known to ourselves
this is so raw! thankyou for reading
I’m so happy you’re trying again. This was a beautiful read 🤍 It’s also convinced me to move up The Goldfinch on my tbr.
Ok then. Am going to start writing.
